Google Wary Of PageRank Passing
Google has spoken out about there dislike of search engine optimizers and webmasters who participate in the selling and purchasing of links that pass PageRank. In an attempt to halt this practice, Google have threatened that any sites trying to pass page rank could have a PageRank plummet.
Google are somewhat worried about the growing trend of PageRank passing as the culprits have no regard for the quality of the links, the source or overall effect passing PageRank can have on their site in the future.
"Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results."
PageRank is essentially a measure of a sites importance on the web and is utilized by Google as a method on how they order ranking of sites on the Internet. By simply linking to a high ranking site, a low ranking site can be given a small boost. Search Engine Optimizers and webmasters have noticed this and higher ranking sites are providing links to smaller sites in return for cash, without regarding the integrity of the purchaser.
In an attempt to crack down of these links, Google began lowering the PageRank of high profile sites that were engaging in PageRank passing. However, they believe that buying and selling links is an integral activity for any website business, so long as this is done for advertising purposes as oppose to trying to manipulate Search Engines.
Google search engine guru Matt Cutts states that “Our goal is to provide users the best search experience by presenting equitable and accurate results," he goes on to say. "We enjoy working with webmasters, and an added benefit of our working together is that when you make better and more accessible content, the internet, as well as our index, improves. This in turn allows us to deliver more relevant search results to users."
